How We Curate Books

Devil’s Rock Books is a curated horror book discovery platform.

That means not every book submitted to us will appear on the site — and that’s by design.

Our goal is simple: to help readers discover horror books that offer quality, care and a meaningful reading experience, while spotlighting the authors and stories that make the genre so powerful.

Reader-first curation

Every book featured on Devil’s Rock Books is selected with readers in mind.

We do not operate as an open directory or a paid listing service. Inclusion is based on editorial judgement, not popularity, advertising spend or submission volume.

If a book appears on Devil’s Rock Books, it’s because we believe it has something worth offering the right reader.

Baseline eligibility

To be considered for inclusion, a book must:

  • Clearly fall within horror or horror-adjacent genres

  • Be publicly available through recognised retailers (such as Amazon, Kobo or Barnes & Noble)

  • Be professionally presented, including editing, formatting and cover design appropriate to indie or traditional publishing standards

  • Be human-written and not generated by AI or mass-produced systems

Books that do not meet these baseline criteria will not be considered further.

Genre fit and categorisation

Devil’s Rock Books uses a defined genre system to help readers explore horror more effectively.

Each book must:

  • Fit clearly within at least one core horror category

  • Be categorised honestly and accurately

  • Avoid misleading or forced genre placement

Books that blur genres are welcome. Books that do not meaningfully belong within horror are not.

Quality and craft

We do not require perfection.

We do look for intent, care and craft.

When reviewing a book, we consider things such as:

  • Strength of authorial voice

  • Control of tone and atmosphere

  • Coherence of storytelling, including experimental or unconventional structures

  • Thoughtful handling of themes

  • A clear sense of what the book is trying to achieve

Sales figures, bestseller status and social media presence are not part of this assessment.

Reader and critical signals

Where available, we may also consider broader reader or critical signals, such as public reviews or ratings on recognised platforms.

These signals are used for context only and are never the sole factor in an inclusion decision. Devil’s Rock Books does not operate on minimum rating thresholds, and new, niche or overlooked books may be featured regardless of rating count if they meet our editorial standards and offer clear value to readers.

Reader value

A key question guides every decision:

Would a horror reader who finds this book through Devil’s Rock Books likely feel their time was well spent?

Not every book needs to appeal to everyone.

Every book does need to offer value to someone.

That value might be fear, fun, discomfort, emotional impact, originality, atmosphere or bold experimentation.

Diversity of voices

Devil’s Rock Books actively values a wide range of voices, perspectives and approaches to horror.

We welcome:

  • Independent and small-press titles

  • Underrepresented authors

  • International and culturally specific horror

  • Books that take risks or challenge expectations

This is not a quota system, but a commitment to building a library that feels alive, varied and meaningful.

Submissions and recommendations

We welcome book submissions and reader recommendations and treat them with respect.

  • Reader recommendations are valued for their authenticity

  • Author and publisher submissions are reviewed neutrally and on merit

  • Submission does not guarantee inclusion

Due to volume, we may not be able to respond to every submission individually.

Editorial discretion

Final inclusion decisions are made by Devil’s Rock Books.

Books may be:

  • Accepted and published on the site

  • Deferred for later consideration

  • Declined

We are not obligated to provide public explanations for individual decisions, but we aim to apply this policy consistently and fairly.

What we do not do

To be clear, Devil’s Rock Books does not:

  • Accept payment for inclusion or placement

  • Guarantee coverage, reviews or visibility

  • Rank books by sales performance or popularity

  • Host or link to pirated or illegally shared content

  • Include books solely for trend-chasing or SEO purposes

Our guiding principle

At its heart, Devil’s Rock Books exists to serve readers and celebrate horror as a craft.

We curate horror we believe in — not horror that simply exists.
